YouTube has begun deploying a sweeping redesign of its video player and on-screen icons for Android and iOS devices, marking one of the most significant visual changes the platform has seen in years.
The update, starting with version 20.42, introduces noticeably larger and more rounded icons throughout the player interface and a cleaner, less cluttered layout. In landscape mode, controls have been grouped into a pill-shaped container at the bottom-left, and the visual emphasis has shifted toward prioritizing the video content itself rather than overlaying controls.
In addition to the refreshed aesthetics, YouTube has made functional tweaks: animations for double-tap seek have been smoothed out, and a revamped threaded comment system replaces the previous flat list format, improving readability and structure. Google describes the redesign as aligning the app with its current “material” design language, aiming for a “cleaner and more immersive” experience.
The rollout is currently global but staggered—some users may have to relaunch their app or wait a short while before the new design appears. While the majority of feedback has been issued via tech-news outlets rather than direct user commentary, early responses are mixed: some users appreciate the visual refresh and usability tweaks, while others feel the change is too bold or unfamiliar.
For creators and viewers alike, the redesign signals YouTube’s continued push toward modernizing its mobile experience and reducing visual friction around content consumption. As the update rolls out more broadly, more detailed feedback and usage patterns will emerge—especially around how the new UI impacts viewing habits, creator workflow and ad display. In the meantime, Android and iOS users should check for version 20.42 (or later) and consider manually updating or restarting the app if the new interface hasn’t yet appeared on their device.
