New Delhi — India will observe Police Commemoration Day 2025 on October 21 (Tuesday), a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering and honouring the brave police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The day serves as a national tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering service of the men and women who protect the nation.

The observance of Police Commemoration Day dates back to October 21, 1959, when ten Indian police personnel were killed during a clash with Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh. The patrol team of 20 members from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was ambushed while on duty near the Indo-China border. Their supreme sacrifice became a symbol of dedication and valor in the face of danger.

In January 1960, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police decided to mark October 21 every year as Police Commemoration Day, in remembrance of those who lost their lives safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and citizens’ safety.

In 2025, ceremonies will be held across the country to pay tribute to these heroes. The National Police Memorial in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri will host the central observance, where senior officials, dignitaries, and family members of the martyrs will lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence. State and district police units will also conduct parades, memorial events, and public outreach programmes to highlight the contributions of police forces.

The day also emphasizes the continued risks faced by police personnel in maintaining law and order, combating crime, and ensuring internal security. From counterterrorism operations to disaster relief and daily public safety duties, thousands of officers across India put their lives on the line every day.

Beyond remembrance, the day serves as a reminder of the values of duty, discipline, and dedication that define India’s police services. It stands as a collective gesture of gratitude from a nation that relies on its protectors — often the first responders in times of crisis.

As India marks Police Commemoration Day 2025, the nation pauses to honour its fallen heroes — the silent guardians whose sacrifices continue to inspire generations of service.
