The observance of Police Commemoration Day dates back to October 21, 1959, when ten Indian police personnel were killed during a clash with Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh. The patrol team of 20 members from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was ambushed while on duty near the Indo-China border. Their supreme sacrifice became a symbol of dedication and valor in the face of danger.
In January 1960, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police decided to mark October 21 every year as Police Commemoration Day, in remembrance of those who lost their lives safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and citizens’ safety.

The National Police Memorial in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri will host the central observance, where senior officials, dignitaries, and family members of the martyrs will lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence.
